Get Your Fox River Valley Lawn Ready For Spring!

by The Rullo Team

Get your green thumb ready! Spring is right around the corner! While it might still be a little bit before the warmer weather fully reaches us, now is actually the perfect time to start prepping your Fox River Valley lawn! Complete these lawn care tasks today and enjoy the most stunning yard this spring!

1. Wash Salt Away

All the salt used on the winter roads can do a number on your grass and plants. Give your landscaping a good watering to get rid of this winter remnant.

2. Patch It Up

Now is the perfect time to patch up those thin and barren spots around your lawn. Add grass seed or sod to these areas before the ground temperature rises above 65 degrees. This will help keep weeds at bay.

3. Remove Debris

After the fall and winter, your yard is likely filled with some leftover leaves, branches, and yard debris. Although this stuff protects your lawn in the colder months, it hinders growth in the spring. Do a good cleaning by removing all these items from your grass and garden.

4. Prune & Fertilize

Check the soil for dryness. If it is crumbling instead of clumping, you can begin pruning and fertilizing. Remove old growth from perennials and prune your trees and shrubs. Add a slow release fertilizer to your plants, trees, and grass. Use one that also contains a pre-emergent herbicide to help fight off weeds.

5. Plant Cool Season Plants

Once your soil is dry enough, you can start to add some fresh greenery to your garden. Although temperatures might not seem warm enough, there are some resilient growers (such as bare-root plants, snapdragons, and pansies) that love the conditions of this time of year.

6. Pick Out Your Perennials

Although you cannot plant them yet, now is the time to pick out and preorder the perennials you want to plant this spring. Most nurseries offer deals on these plants at this time of year. Not only will you get a great price but you will also enjoy the best selection!

7. Service Your Mower

Have your lawn mower serviced and ready to go for the first cut of spring. Keep it running in tip top shape all spring and summer by sharpening the blades, changing the oil, and replacing the spark plugs.

Let Others Know Of Your Change In Address!

by The Rullo Team

Santa might always be able to magically find your home even after you move, but others cannot! If you recently moved to a new home in the Fox River Valley, it is important that you inform others of your change in address! Individuals, organizations, and agencies need to have the correct address on file in order to keep sending you the information and items you need. Here is a handy list of everyone you should inform of your new address when you move.

Family & Friends: Make sure your loved ones show up to the right holiday party by providing them with your new address.

Post Office: Almost all homeowners remember to inform the post office so they can begin forwarding your mail. But, just in case you forgot, click HERE to submit your official change of address with the USPS.

Utilities: Don't pay for utilities in your old home and have services start right when you move in by letting all utilities, including gas, electric, cable, and internet, know about your change of address.

Cell Phone Provider: The tax on your cell phone bill is determined based on your primary residence so you are required to keep your billing address up to date with your carrier.

Employer: The most important people at your place of work that should know about your move are located in your HR department. Give them the new address so they can update the information for payroll and benefits.

Financial Institutions: Mail from financial institutions often contains sensitive, personal information so you don't want it getting into the wrong hands. Update your address with your bank and credit card institutions.

Insurance Providers: Be able to file claims with your auto, dental, health, homeowners, and life insurance providers by keeping your policy up to date with your new address.

Health Providers: Inform your doctor, dentist, and other health care providers on your change in address so you never fall behind on medical bills.

DMV: The state of Illinois requires all residents to inform the IL SOS Driver Services Department of your address change within 10 days. Click HERE  for more information.

IRS: Don't let your tax refund be delayed in the spring. Update your change of address with the IRS now by clicking HERE.

Social Security Administration: If you receive Social Security benefits, you need to let the SSA know of your address change. Click HERE to update it online. If you receive aid from Medicare, Medicaid or other government benefit programs, be sure to inform them as well.

Voter Registration: Be able to vote in all upcoming elections by updating your voter registration information. This will also let you know where your new polling place is.

Newspapers & Magazine Subscriptions: Never miss out on the latest news or current editions of your favorite magazines by updating your address for all subscriptions.

Shopping Websites: Keep those holiday presents coming to the right home by updating your delivery address on all your online shopping accounts.

Pet Safety Tips For A Happy Holiday Season!

by The Rullo Team

Ensure a happy holiday season for the furriest member of your family......your pet! During this time of year, our homes are filled with many new things that peak their curiosity. Their curiosity can cause damage to holiday decor or, and more importantly, be hazardous for our beloved pets! Keep your furry friend happy and healthy during the holidays by following these easy tips for pet safety!

  • Although we want to treat our pets during the holidays, avoid sharing table scrapes with them. There are many foods on our holiday plates that are toxic for them, such as chocolate, raisins, garlic, and onions. Keep them away from tables and garbage that might contain bones or plastic utensils. These items can be hazardous if swallowed.
  • Alcohol can have incredibly serious effects on the the health of your pet. Keep all adult beverages far away from your furry friend.
  • Candles are a beautiful part of the holiday season but they can very easily be knocked over by your pet. Opt for flameless candles so you can still keep the ambiance you desire.
  • Cables seem like a delicious new chew toy to some pets but this can lead to electric shock to your animal. Hide any cables and/or use citronella infused covers to deter chewing.
  • Poinsettas are a beautiful holiday plant but their leaves are incredibly toxic to animals. Avoid any health disasters by opting for silk plants or sprinkle pepper on the leaves to deter your pets from eating them.
  • Cats and dogs are invariably intrigued by the new tree in the house. Keep them away by using household ground white pepper or another natural deterrent around the lower branches and tree skirt. Avoid using ornaments made out of edible materials as they become far to inticing for your curious pet.
  • Always have a responsible family member keep an eye on your pet during gatherings. This will ensure that your pet isn't stealing food from the table, getting into mischeif, or accidently getting outside.
  • During large gatherings, find a quiet room that you can keep your pet in. Just make sure to provide them with lots of toys and treats to distract them. This gives you a break from having to watch them while you entertain and more importantly gives them a peaceful spot away from the hustle and bustle (which causes anxiety in some animals).

Spread Holiday Cheer And Sell This Season!

by The Rullo Team

Spread cheer by selling your home this holiday season! We understand the impulse of taking your home off the market until the beginning of the new year. But, December can actually be a great time to sell! Here are the top reasons why you should sell your Fox River Valley home during the holidays!

1. Enjoy Less Competition!

Other people in your area will undoubtedly take their homes off the market or delay listing their homes. This will reduce the inventory of homes and make it more likely that your home will rise to the top of the search lists. With less competition, you have better chances of your home being sold.

2. Your Home Looks And Smells Festive!

Staging is taken care of during the holidays with your warm fireplace, festive decor, and delicious smells of home-baked goods. This homey ambiance can create feelings of nostalgia within the buyer and urge them to make an offer. Just make sure you don't go overboard with decorations. You still want buyers to be able to imagine themselves within the home as well as show off the best features of your home without distracting clutter.

3. Serious Buyers Look During The Holidays!

Any buyers that are still looking during the holiday are ready to buy NOW! These buyers have either been looking for a while and have yet to find something we love or they have just entered the market and need to buy quickly. Either way take advantage of their desire to find a home as soon as possible.

4. Buyers With Children Are Utilizing the School Break!

There are prospective buyers that use the holiday season to find a home in order to get their children settled before school starts up again in January. These are more serious buyers that are actively lookin g to find a home as soon as possible.

5. Closing Is Faster!

The spring time is a busy time for lenders. That means that buyers have to wait longer to get their loans processed and approved. The slow down in the housing market in December makes the lending process move quicker which means closing can occur much faster!

6. Change Your Strategy To Sell!

Don't take your home off the market during the holidays even if it has been on the market for a while now. Instead, use this time to adjust your strategy. Is your asking price what it should be? Is there a different way you could stage your home? Are there things you could fix up?

Tips to Prep Your Home for Thanksgiving Day Guests!

by The Rullo Team

Thanksgiving is next week! If you are hosting the big feast at your Fox River Valley  home, now is the perfect time to prepare so you feel less stress as the day approaches. Along with planning out your delicious menu, get your home ready so all your guests will be comfy and happy this holiday!

1. Keep It Bright!

You know your home like the back of your hand but your guests don't. Make sure that everyone can safely navigate throughout your home no matter what time of day it is. Check that all outdoor lights are working. Add nightlights to hallways and in bedrooms and bathrooms that guests will be using.

2. Clear The Space!

Remove all unnecessary clutter to accomodate more people in your house. Store these items out of the way in closests and the basement. Make sure you have ample space on counters and tables for all of your food prep.

3. Say Welcome!

Create an amazing first impression for guests as they enter your home by focusing on the foyer. Add some welcoming touches for a festive, homey feel. At the same time, keep it functional for your guests. With the colder weather, you will need ample space for guests to place their coats, shoes, and gear.

4. Get Your Kitchen Ready!

Your kitchen will be the central hub of your home next week so make sure that it is ready to go before the cooking starts. Have all essential items easily accessible. Make it possible for guests to keep you company as you cook by creating a comfortable hang spot for them in the kitchen.

5. Feels Like Home!

If guests are spending the night, make sure that they will be as comfortable as possible. Stock up on warm bedding for them to use. Even if they aren't sleeping over, have spots throughout your home where they can relax since we all get tired after the big feast!

6. Stock Up!

Make sure that all essential items are available in your home's bathroom to account for your additional guests. Stock up on toilet paper, towels, and toiletries for them to use. Keep these items in spots that are easy for guests to locate when they are needed.

The Rullo Team wishes everyone a very Happy Thanksgiving!
