A Season to be Thankful!

by The Rullo Team

A season to be thankful…

5 ways to give back this holiday season

There are so many ways to help others this season, or all year long! Now, who wouldn’t love to do that??

  1. Support our Troops: United Service Organizations offers a variety of drives for soldiers. You could also sponsor the cost of a phone call home, the local USO division can assist you with information. This year, Yankee Candle Company is selling Thankgiving-themed candles with part of the proceeds going to support the USO’s programs.
  2. Donate to a Food Bank: This would seem an obvious one, but did you know that not only can you donate food….but donate your time and money also? Food banks such as Northern Illinois Food Bank will accept help sorting food at their facility but if you are short on time, you can make a monetary donation. Whichever you choose, they are grateful for your help!
  3. Visit a Retirement home: Retirement homes and Memory care facilities often have residents who won’t see a family member during Thanksgiving. All you need to do is check the visiting hours and bring the gift of good conversation!
  4. Help the home-bound elderly:  Meals on Wheels delivers daily more than 1 million meals to the home-bound, and a large number of them are elderly. This organization is always looking for volunteers to continue their good works!
  5. Visit a hospital: Sadly, there are no holidays in a hospital. Call your local hospital and inquire as to how you can volunteer for the holiday. Offer to distribute food, bring small gifts to children or elderly, or maybe the best gift of all, just simply sitting and visiting with someone.

Curb Appeal For Fall Home Selling in the Fox River Valley!

As the temperature starts to dip pet owners should take a moment to prepare their pets for the colder months ahead. Here are a few things to remember to protect your pet:

General pet wellness: A visit to your Vet for a wellness exam is always a good idea, but remember certain conditions, like arthritis are made worse by the cold weather.

Knowing your pets limits: Just because our pets have a beautiful fur coat does not mean that they are unaffected by the cold weather! Coats and booties for dogs and short trips outside will help in the frigid temps.

Provide choices inside: Comfy dog and kitty beds away from drafty doors and windows will be provide a great place for a winter day snooze.

Watch their food intake: Contrary to popular belief a chubby pet is not a warmer pet! Factor in their reduced activity level when feeding and giving treats.

Avoid ice and salt: When cabin fever sets in a short dog walk is nice, but watch out for ice and salt on the sidewalk. Salt can irritate your pets paws and you should always wipe it off, but also so that your pet does not ingest the sometimes toxic salt crystals.

Common sense and a bit of planning will keep your pets happy till Spring!!

It's important to make sure that everyone stays safe this Halloween! Follow these great safety tips during trick-or-treating:

  • All trick-or-treaters should walk in groups and not alone.
  • Young children should always be accompanied by their parents or another adult.
  • If you are going to be out after dark, make sure that everyone is visible in your group. Be sure to carry a flashlight. Wear light colored costumes or add reflective tape generously to costumes.
  • Costumes should fit properly to avoid any tripping hazards. Costumes should also not restrict vision.
  • Only walk while trick-or-treating. Stay on sidewalks whenever possible and only cross streets at designated crosswalks or intersections. Leave bicycles or skateboards at home.
  • Review with your children the importance of watching for traffic. If you are a motorist on Halloween night, be on the look out for children.
  • Examine all of your children's candy before letting them eat any. Only keep candy that is wrapped or packaged.
