After the horrible storms that ripped through our state recently, devastating the community of Fairdale, it prompted us to  the go over the Emergency Preparedness Guidelines for spring & summer storms so that you can prepare to keep your family safe.

The lists on this page are meant to give you guidelines & tools necessary to prepare you and your familyin the best way possible, in the event you are in your home when Mother Nature decides to show her power one more time.

*Remember...Don't ever leave a sheltered area to try to save any material possessions from your home.

Are you and your family safe from storms and tornados?

People often feel prepared, only to be proven wrong when disaster strikes.  The videos below will help you determine how safe you & your family actually are if a disaster strikes.

In an effort to help American's better prepare for disasters, The Federal Emergency Management Agency has designated April 30 as "America's Prepareathon." Providing tips to deal with flooding, tornadoes, earthquakes, wildfires, hurricanes and winter storms.  They recommend having basic supplies to get you through the first 72 hours after disaster strikes, whether you are stuck at work or home, or if you have to evacuate.

The Basic kit:

• Flashlights/lanterns (hand-cranked preferred)
• A portable radio (hand-cranked preferred)
• Batteries
• A gallon of water per day
• Nonperishable food for three days
• Manual can opener
• First-aid supplies
• Whistle or an air horn (for alerting rescuers if you are trapped)
• Dust mask
• Change of clothing, including long-sleeved shirt, long pants and sturdy shoes.

Also:
• Prescription medicines and eyeglasses
• A cellphone charger or power inverter
• Plastic bags and towelettes for hygiene use
• Cash
• Mess kit
• Copies of important papers, including insurance documents, or a thumb drive with that info

Ther's an An app for that! FEMA has apps. And the American Red Cross has a new Emergency app that combines their previous apps for disasters and first aid.

Green For More Green in the Fox Valley

by The Rullo Team

You've heard the age old saying "don't judge a book by it's cover", well this rule simply doesn't apply to the real estate market.  A good looking face isn't just memorable, the exterior of your home can make or break a sale.  It can be the difference between you getting your asking price or settling for much less.  First impressions are everything in the real estate business.  According to the National Association of Realtors; 63% of people will stop by to view a home they found and liked online.  What will they see? They will see the driveway, the front yard and the facade of your house.  So, what this means is you have to focus just as much attention on the outdoor impression of your home as the indoor.  This impression starts immediately when they see your home online.  So, invest a little time and money into the exterior of your home...before you take the stunning photos you will post online.  Green up the grass, plant some flowers and shrubs, clean the lingering winter dirt from the side of your house; give the exterior of your home a little loving makeover.  I promise, it will be worth it when you sell your home for exactly what you were asking for it.

Residents in the Fox Vallery area are especially lucky because right here in St. Charles is one of Today’s Garden Center magazine’s Revolutionary 100 Garden Centers for 2015.

Wasco Nursery Named One of Today’s Garden Center’s “Revolutionary 100”

Wasco Nursery & Garden Center is putting Saint Charles, IL on the map. It was recently named one of the top Garden Centers in America by The Revolutionary 100 program, which began in 2006.  The program surveys garden center owners and managers on how they run their businesses.  The revolutionary 100 determines the health of these businesses and how they impact their communities.

Wasco Nursery & Garden Center is the perfect resource for homeowners and sellers looking to spruce up the  exterior of their homes for the summer market.   With a full service retail garden center, nursery and a    landscape business Wasco Nursery can meet nearly every landscape need. Wasco has remained dedicated to  growing and selling the best varieties of trees, shrubs, annuals and perennials, as well as new exotic plants  from around the world. They also have a whole library of information in store and online, on how to care for your lawn safely and effectively.  There are tools on the website to help you plan your next garden, a plant search database and tips and tricks to help through the entire process.  They are constantly reccomending the best and safest new products, for example: This Organic Lawn food turns lackluster yellow lawns green again, without harming your family or pets in the process. Their friendly staff are always willing to talk you through new processes and with a staff of 48 people in the peak season, the customer service is damn near perfect.  Check out their website to learn more.

Each year, Earth Day, April 22, marks the anniversary of  the birth of the modern environmental movement.

Sure 1970 braught plenty of gloom; Jimi Hendrix died, the Beatles released their last album, and War raged in Vietnam.  The enviornment was the last thing on many American's minds as we continued guzzling leaded gas in our giant engines.  Industry exhaled its dirty black smoke  into the air and toxic waste was dumped wherever there was space. Little thought was given to the consequences.  Air pollution was accepted as progress, and the word "Enviornment" was hardly heard in the news.  Until April 22nd 1970.  Earth Day 1970 channeled the protest energy of the war into another battle, the battle for the earth.

The idea came to founder Gaylord Nelson, a U.S. Senator from Wisconsin, after he witnessed the devastation of the 1969 oil spill in Santa Barbara, California. Inspired by the anti-war movement, he understood that if he could combine that student protest energy with the emerging public consciousness about  pollution, policy makers would have no choice but to put Enviornmental Protection onto their political agenda.  On April 22, 20 million Americans took to the streets in massive rallies, demonstrating for a healthy sustainable enviornment and were received with support from both Republicans and Democrats.  Earth Day 1970 was a great success and eventually led to the United States Enviornmental Protection Agency.

Give our Earth some love.  Afterall it's the only earth we have.

Geneva & Aurora IL Restaurants TOP THE LIST OUTSIDE OF CHICAGO!

by The Rullo Team

Every year Thrillist magazine sends out their army of taste testers on a gastronomical quest to discover suburban Chicago's finest culinary treasures. They discovered two fine eateries right here in the Fox Valley. One has landed on their coveted list before....Bien Trucha of Geneva, IL, the other is a newcomer to the world of Thrillist and the highly lauded annual list, Basil's Greek Dining of Aurora, IL!  We're happy to report that both of these restaurants are definitely culinary treasures, as they were so expertly named.

Bien Trucha of Geneva is not your average "mexican restaurant". They put together some of the most unique ingredients that you probably wouldn't dream of putting together, like blueberries and pork taco's, with the end result being a mouth-watering delight. Or their BROCHETAS Pica-Pica of bacon wrapped shrimp with onion, pineapple and chipotle-lime glaze. SERIOUSLY...ARE YOU HUNGRY YET?! The menu is perfect, the drinks are amazing and you need to try it the next time you're hungry for Mexican Food and you're in the Geneva IL area.

Fox Valley...What's That Smell?!

by The Rullo Team

Ugh....Getting our Fox Valley homes opened up and cleaned out after a long winter can feel liberating, but sometimes we overlook the odors that are lurking in our homes. Our mother's have always told us that the biggest indicator's of cleanliness are odors. But what are the odors stemming from? This is critical as some odors can literally permeate through all porous surfaces of your home making it extremely difficult to "Quell the Smell"! Is it simply Johnny's stinky shoes and socks left by the back door or is it something far more serious like a leaky sewage valve? So you see, identifying the source of your odor is key to not only eliminating the odor, but making sure that the problem itself is taken care of in it's entirety so that it will not surface again to cause major issues.

If you're having common odor issues in your home, here are some great, easy remedy's to deal with them:

LEMON- Mmmm....A natural disinfectant that smells so citrusy good, can do so much to get rid of odors. Did you have a smelly fish or seafood dinner? Boil 2 Cups of water, add Lemon Peel and 3 TBSP Baking Soda....your fishy smell will start to disipate. Use the rest of your Lemon (sqeeze the juice) into a spray bottle and use as a mixture to clean kitchen counter tops, appliances, and cutting boards.

VINEGAR- My personal favorite! This multi-purpose product is FANTASTIC, but we're going to start with where it's really useful...the DREADED REFRIGERATOR! If you'd rather do just about anything else than clean out your refrigerator, than grab the Vinegar, this guy is going to be your Best Bud! Throw out your expired food, and wipe down the entire inside with vinegar. Proceed to put a box of Baking Soda in the fridge to help keep future odors at bay!

COFFEE GROUNDS- Bet ya didn't see that coming?! It's true, coffee grounds are absorbant and are great for small, closed-in spaces or for stinky gym shoes! All you need to do is keep a can of coffee grounds in the tightly sealed location, or in the case of the stinky shoes- seal the shoes, with the coffee grounds, in a ziplock bag of sorts (make sure it is airtight), the grounds will absorb the smell within 48 hours!

PET ODORS- These can be the WORST! Thank goodness we can give our Furry Friends a good bath to keep those odors to a minimum! When you're done with a Pet Bath, sprinkle on some Baking Soda on their Fur...then brush it out. They'll smell quite a bit fresher!!

FRESH FLOWERS- Still one of the best ways to banish odors. The smell of fresh flowers wafting through your home is still preferred by many to the other options available today! Having company over for dinner? This is still the easy and beautiful way to get your home smelling lovely, just in time for your guests to arrive.

7 Handy Tools For Fox Valley Moving Day!

by The Rullo Team

You've SOLD your St Charles, Geneva or Batavia Illinois home! Now you're getting ready to move into your new home. Moving is much easier when you have all the proper tools to pack, load and unload your belongings the right way.

7 HANDY TOOLS TO HAVE IN YOUR MOVING DAY ARSENAL:

LABELER  Make sure the movers know where each box is going!  Best practice is to label ALL SIDES of the box.  Using a labeler makes this process much easier to do.

HAND CART  A Hand Cart has two-wheels and a ledge for sliding things underneath.  It's perfect for carting out multiple boxes at once...without putting undo stess on your body.

DOLLY  The basic cart, platform on wheels.  It is essential for moving out all heavy furniture. Most moving companies will assist you with both the Dolly and the Hand Cart.

LIFTING STRAPS    DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE THESE STRAPS!  These are essential in safely lifting furiture to a dolly!  They help to evenly distribute the weight and to get awkwardly shaped and bulky obects lifted, without hurting you or putting extra strain and stress on the body.

CAMERA    Not just to make memories of your move- although that's something you should do as well- Use a camera to take photos of all your belongings prior to moving.  Taking photos before hand will actually help you get organized in your new home.  You will be able to efficiently get to the things you need, set- up electronics more quickly, even rebuild things needed more efficiently because you have the photos of them right in front of you!  Secondly, and very importantly, if you need to file an insurance claim, you have all the evidence you need!

ZIP TIES!   Surprised? Don't be...these should be on every list, anywhere.  In this instance you'll use them for keeping wires bundled together or keeping equipment together.

ZIPLOCK BAGS   These handy little bags will be used to store the screws and bolts from furniture or electronics that have been taken apart for the move, and tape it to that furniture so that it will be easy to put back together once you reach your new destination!

Need more help than just tools? Hire professional Fox Valley movers to get the job done for you!  If you are planning a move to the Fox Valley, please contact a member of the Rullo Team and we'll be happy to meet with you personally and learn more about your personal requirements for a home and community so that we can find the perfect home for you.
