Pet Safety Tips For A Happy Holiday Season!

by The Rullo Team

Ensure a happy holiday season for the furriest member of your family......your pet! During this time of year, our homes are filled with many new things that peak their curiosity. Their curiosity can cause damage to holiday decor or, and more importantly, be hazardous for our beloved pets! Keep your furry friend happy and healthy during the holidays by following these easy tips for pet safety!

  • Although we want to treat our pets during the holidays, avoid sharing table scrapes with them. There are many foods on our holiday plates that are toxic for them, such as chocolate, raisins, garlic, and onions. Keep them away from tables and garbage that might contain bones or plastic utensils. These items can be hazardous if swallowed.
  • Alcohol can have incredibly serious effects on the the health of your pet. Keep all adult beverages far away from your furry friend.
  • Candles are a beautiful part of the holiday season but they can very easily be knocked over by your pet. Opt for flameless candles so you can still keep the ambiance you desire.
  • Cables seem like a delicious new chew toy to some pets but this can lead to electric shock to your animal. Hide any cables and/or use citronella infused covers to deter chewing.
  • Poinsettas are a beautiful holiday plant but their leaves are incredibly toxic to animals. Avoid any health disasters by opting for silk plants or sprinkle pepper on the leaves to deter your pets from eating them.
  • Cats and dogs are invariably intrigued by the new tree in the house. Keep them away by using household ground white pepper or another natural deterrent around the lower branches and tree skirt. Avoid using ornaments made out of edible materials as they become far to inticing for your curious pet.
  • Always have a responsible family member keep an eye on your pet during gatherings. This will ensure that your pet isn't stealing food from the table, getting into mischeif, or accidently getting outside.
  • During large gatherings, find a quiet room that you can keep your pet in. Just make sure to provide them with lots of toys and treats to distract them. This gives you a break from having to watch them while you entertain and more importantly gives them a peaceful spot away from the hustle and bustle (which causes anxiety in some animals).

Spread Holiday Cheer And Sell This Season!

by The Rullo Team

Spread cheer by selling your home this holiday season! We understand the impulse of taking your home off the market until the beginning of the new year. But, December can actually be a great time to sell! Here are the top reasons why you should sell your Fox River Valley home during the holidays!

1. Enjoy Less Competition!

Other people in your area will undoubtedly take their homes off the market or delay listing their homes. This will reduce the inventory of homes and make it more likely that your home will rise to the top of the search lists. With less competition, you have better chances of your home being sold.

2. Your Home Looks And Smells Festive!

Staging is taken care of during the holidays with your warm fireplace, festive decor, and delicious smells of home-baked goods. This homey ambiance can create feelings of nostalgia within the buyer and urge them to make an offer. Just make sure you don't go overboard with decorations. You still want buyers to be able to imagine themselves within the home as well as show off the best features of your home without distracting clutter.

3. Serious Buyers Look During The Holidays!

Any buyers that are still looking during the holiday are ready to buy NOW! These buyers have either been looking for a while and have yet to find something we love or they have just entered the market and need to buy quickly. Either way take advantage of their desire to find a home as soon as possible.

4. Buyers With Children Are Utilizing the School Break!

There are prospective buyers that use the holiday season to find a home in order to get their children settled before school starts up again in January. These are more serious buyers that are actively lookin g to find a home as soon as possible.

5. Closing Is Faster!

The spring time is a busy time for lenders. That means that buyers have to wait longer to get their loans processed and approved. The slow down in the housing market in December makes the lending process move quicker which means closing can occur much faster!

6. Change Your Strategy To Sell!

Don't take your home off the market during the holidays even if it has been on the market for a while now. Instead, use this time to adjust your strategy. Is your asking price what it should be? Is there a different way you could stage your home? Are there things you could fix up?

This forest preserve features open spaces as well as a 31 acre wooded portion. It stretches along the shores of the beautiful Fox River, opening up opportunities for fishing. The trails that traverse the Fox River Bluff Forest Preserve are perfect for biking and hiking.

Top Trends for Gardening in 2018!

by The Rullo Team

Outdoor space is just as important as indoor space and is the first impression an individual has of your home.  Landscaping and gardening to increase curb appeal will help to sell your home, but you need to choose wisely.  Below are tips for creating the outdoor ambiance you're looking for:

1. Evaluate your soil before planning your landscaping and gardens.  The soil makeup, access to sunlight and your climate, will dictate the types of plants you should use.

2. While it is very easy to snap of flowers and greens by beauty alone, it's important to look at plants that are hearty for your climate.  Here are a few to consider in the Midwest:  Orange Butterfly Milkweed, Coneflower, Bee Balm, Black-eyed Susan, Little Bluestem, Switchgrass, and Goldenrod.

3. Outdoor trends for 2018 include beautiful Zen Gardens to promote relaxation and peace in your outdoor space.  To create a meditative space include a natural bench facing the sun, a waterfall or pond, native greens and a well-appointed serene piece of outdoor art.

4. Kitchen- It may sound strange but outdoor kitchens are actually upstaging indoor ones in 2018!  Why?  We all want to maximize our outdoor living space and take advantage of the seasons. Create your outdoor kitchen with comfortable seating, shading, grill, fridge and easily accessible snacks.

5. Are you the type of individual who loves the color and beauty of a garden but doesn't want the daily maintenance of one?  Then the "Bedhead" garden is for you!  HGTV defines the Bedhead Garden as one with easy care and random structure. Think ornamental grass, use of stone and wood with drought-proof plants.

Protect your Pets from the Stress of Fireworks!

by The Rullo Team

With the celebrations of the 4th of July tomorrow, it's important to protect your pets from the stress of the loud noises of Fireworks Displays that will fill the nighttime sky.  Pets are under stress from loud auditory sounds throughout their daily lives;  police cars, ambulances, firetrucks, construction and more.  However, firework displays are far greater than the 120-decibel pain threshold for pets...fireworks are in the 170-decibel range!  Below are some tips to help alleviate the stress and keep your pets safe:

1. DO NOT TAKE YOUR PET TO THE FIREWORKS DISPLAY!!

2. Keep them in a quieter, interior room to help shield from the noise.

3. Turn on the Television or Radio to add some everyday background noise that can interfere with the loud noises outside.

4. If at all possible, have a family member stay with your pets during this time.  Especially if you have a new pet!

5. Make sure the room you put them in does not have an easy escape route.  The number of pets that try to escape their situation during fireworks increases substantially on the 4th.

6. Check to be sure that your pet has identification tags or is chipped, in case they do escape the home.

7. If you've chosen to have fireworks at your own home, make sure you've cleaned up the debris as it will be toxic for pets...especially when being chewed on.

8. When returning from a fireworks display, try to be calm upon entering your home and keeping loud everyday home noises to a minimum.

The Rullo Team wishes everyone a happy & safe Independence Day!

Enhance Your Curb Appeal for Spring!

by The Rullo Team

Are you ready to "Spring" into the Fox River Valley? With the temperatures rising and the snow melting, now is the perfect time to start enhancing your home's curb appeal so it is ready for the market. Follow these simple tips to have your home looking its absolute best!

1. Make the Front Door a focal point. Choose a new color that stands out from the rest of the house. Update the knocker and hardware.

2. Ensure that your House Numbers are easy to read. Go across the street from your home to make sure the font is clear and the view is unobstructed. If you need to move its location, place the numbers horizontally and near a porch light so they can be read anytime of the day.

3. Add a cluster of 3 different sized Flower Pots to your front porch and fill them with beautiful spring flowers.

4. Create Illumination by updating lights on the front porch and adding landscape lighting along the front walkway.

5. Consider changing your straight Walkway to one that curves through the front lawn in order to draw the eye through the landscaping.

6. Check your Roof for any damage and hire a professional now to fix the problems as soon as possible.

7. Power clean the Siding to remove the winter grime and have the exterior look brand new. Clean the Windows inside and outside to make sure they sparkle.

8. Check Driveway for cracks and make necessary repairs.

9. Look for patchy areas in the Grass and reseed or sod so it looks perfectly green this spring.

10. Draw buyers to your front door by adding Fragrant Flowers and Plants.

11. Landscape right at the Curb to add depth and color to your front yard.
